- Airline Reservations -- There are several really good choices when making
airline reservations on the Internet, and we link to our favorites
below. You'll get the very best rates by booking as far in advance as
you can, staying over a Saturday night whenever possible, and checking
with each of the major services at varying times throughout the day and
week. On a recent search for a roundtrip ticket between Dallas/Ft. Worth
and Vancouver, British Columbia, we found variations in pricing on the same
reservation service of about $40 (or about 9%) depending upon day and/or
time of day we checked. Requests at roughly identical times on the three
different services found about the same variations, but with no service
consistently the lowest. If time is critical, don't sweat the
difference. If money is your most important concern, be guided
accordingly.

- Hotel Reservations -- Just as with airline reservations, there are
considerable differences between the various online services, with none
consistently standing out as best in either service or rates. Get the
best rates by combining the purchase of airline tickets AND hotel
reservations whenever possible, and staying at one location as long as
convenient. Also, adding car rental reservations into the mix can
further improve the bottom line of your entire trip. Again, check at
different times of the day and on different days of the week if the
lowest possible cost is an important concern and you have the time. Just
don't wait so long that you go past the 21 days in advance deadline that
can save you so much on airfare!.

- Car Rental Reservations -- Here there is a bit better ranking of services according
to whether you're looking for the best price of the best level of
service. We've grouped them for you accordingly.
- Maps -- When it comes to maps, you can't beat Rand McNally and Maps.com for authoritative,
up-to-date maps for just about any place on earth.
- Rand McNally -- You'll find maps you can buy to print immediately, or CDs for
taking your maps with your computer wherever you go.
- Maps.com -- Here you'll find great online resources
- Guide Books - There's nothing quite as valuable if you're exploring new
territory than a great guide book. Really good ones will
increase your enjoyment enormously, leading you to many of the
typically "locals only" attractions few travelers even know about.
The links below are the finest we've found so far, and they are
infinitely better than those "guide books" sold primarily to promote
hotel and motel chains.
